History of Canon Cameras
Founding and Early Years (1933-1940s)
Canon Inc. was founded in 1933 in Tokyo, Japan, originally as Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory. The first product was the Kwanon, a prototype 35mm camera. In 1935, Canon released its first commercial camera, the Hansa Canon, which was well-received.
Post-War Innovation (1950s-1960s)
After World War II, Canon expanded its product line and entered the international market. The introduction of the Canon 7 in 1961 marked Canon’s entry into the rangefinder camera market, while the Canon FX in 1964 was one of the first to feature a built-in light meter.
The Rise of SLR Cameras (1970s-1980s)
The 1970s saw the launch of the Canon F-1, a professional SLR camera that gained popularity among photographers. The introduction of the AE-1 in 1976 revolutionized the market with its user-friendly features, making SLR photography accessible to enthusiasts.
Digital Transformation (1990s-2000s)
Canon embraced digital technology in the 1990s, releasing the first digital SLR camera, the EOS DCS 3, in collaboration with Kodak. The EOS series evolved, leading to the launch of the EOS 5D in 2005, which popularized full-frame digital photography.
